Top Tips for Mexican Style Decor for a Cafe

Mexican decor is so colourful, even during the week of the the Dead Celebrations around Hallowe’en.

Many of their decor ideas are economical too.

Here are my top tips for decorating your cafe in authentic Mexican style.

  1. Use colourful paper cutouts to add ambiance.
  2. Post garlands of paper shapes and a few colourful skulls in it

The old style of buildings have high ceilings and the UNESCO heritage status prevents altering the physical structural interiors, but that hadn’t stopped Mexicans from decorating with the seasons and holidays.

A common theme is colourful skulls. They place them in displays in storefronts and as accents in cafes year round, not just for Hallowe’en. They really go all out during the Week of the Dead (Halllowe’en), and it is scaled down to traces of skulls and skeletons, usually painted in cheerful colours and wild patterns, the rest of the time.

It’s a common theme to decorate the ceilings in cafes, entryways, and lobbies in Mexico, using paper crepe type decorations.

Marigolds – usually fresh marigolds- are added for the Saint’s Day in November as well. Sometimes they make entire thick garlands of them, so you walk through a flower portal to get inside a restaurant or building.

They are long lasting and add a fresh smell and splash of colour in a drab time of year, and I look forward to seeing them around.
